Liposuction (more popularly referred to as “lipo”) is a cosmetic surgery procedure that shapes and contours the body by removing stubborn fat deposits and fat pockets. Although the procedure is most popularly performed on the waist and abdomen, it is also used to remove fat from the neck, chin, chest, back, thighs, hips, ankles, calves, and butt. It results in a more balanced physique by evening out the distribution of fat throughout the body.
There are three different approaches to liposuction: suction assisted, power-assisted, and laser-assisted. The first type is the most traditional; it involves inserting a small cannula in an incision right above the fatty area. The fat is suctioned out by a pressurized vacuum attached to the cannula. The second type is similar to the first but makes use of a mechanized cannula so the surgeon does not have to make as many maneuvers during the procedure. The third type (also called SmartLipo) makes use of a laser to emulsify (melt) the fat in the targeted area for easier extraction; melting the fat allows for a minimally invasive procedure with less scarring and smaller incisions. Your procedure will depend on your medical and physical data as well as the amount of fat that needs to be removed.
Although liposuction helps remove fat and restore the body to a more manageable weight, it is not meant to be a substitute for a healthy diet and an active lifestyle. We advise people who are overweight and/or suffering from obesity to augment their liposuction by adopting a healthier lifestyle.
